Les ruines Chan Chan Ruins

September 8th, 2010 · 1 Comment

A little sightseeing in Trujillo! We rode a couple of kms down the road to the ruins of Chan Chan, South America´s largest Pre-Colombian city. The Chimu town of 30 000 was sacked by the Incas over 500 years ago. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is slowly being restored with meagre funds after having been looted (with dynamite!) over the past 300 or so years. The majority of the site remains unexcavated, and part of the excavated areas have been re-covered with earth to prevent erosion caused by changing weather patterns. The other cyclists are Matt (Mexico-USA) and Nina (Germany) who we met at Trujillo´s Casa Ciclista.
